The General Product Safety Regulation

The GPSR is an EU regulation designed to ensure all consumer products in an EU market are safe. This means the consumer is better protected against unsafe products sold on and offline. It came into effect on 13th December 2024 and from this date all new products to the EU and Northern Ireland markets sold by a business not part of the single market must comply with the new requirements.

The GPSR replaces the General Product Safety Directive (GPSD) and introduces stricter rules covering a wide range of products including electronics, digital products, textiles and furniture.

The GSPR sets out product safety rules for each step of the supply chain from the product manufacturers to their authorised representatives, importers, distributors and online marketplaces. Within the GPSR framework are a set of regulations relating to risk assessments, safety checks, documentation and labelling.

Some changes include:

• GSPR now covers a much wider range of products including items sold online as new or used.
• More rigorous risk assessments and increased accountability for economic operators.
• More power to national authorities to inspect goods and take action against unsafe products.
• Better information provided to consumers.
• Cybersecurity and AI features have been incorporated to safeguard products from external threats.
